The anatomy of a luxury bathroom

What separates a hotel-grade bathroom from a builder's spec. A short tour of the details that quietly do the work.

Most of what makes a luxury bathroom luxurious is invisible by the time you walk in.

It is the substrate behind the stone. It is the height of the brass spout above the basin lip. It is the fall of the floor toward an unseen linear drain. It is the wiring that lets the sconce dim down to the temperature of a candle.

We think of a bathroom as a small architectural commission. Every dimension is drawn. Every fixing is specified. Every transition between materials is considered before a single tile is cut.

When the room is finished, none of that work shows. That is the work.
